Tayo comes to understand the necessity of cultural cross-over in order to build a stronger, more sustainable future, as well as the need to protect the land from human greed. Yet Tayo continues to search for healing, and after he meets the Navajo medicine man Betonie he works to create a new ceremony that will work – this ceremony involves Tayo reconnecting with his past and accepting his “hybrid” ancestry by reclaiming his dead uncle Josiah’s lost cattle, as well as reconnecting with the native spirit world by falling in love with Ts’eh, who seems likely to be the human form of the Laguna goddess Reed Woman.
