![]() Gladys proved her former teacher wrong when she went on to become fluent in Mandarin. Apart from provisions, the duo also told any guests who were willing to listen some Bible stories to convert them to Christianity. Aylward finally worked up the courage to send an application to the China Inland Mission. Her humble occupation, however, did not stop her from dreaming of becoming a missionary. She was only 14 when she had to quit school and work as a housemaid to help her family. Gladys’s family came from a humble background. Her parents, Thomas John and Rosina Aylward, belonged to the Anglican church.
